Three hundred years before Newton was even born, a mathematician in Kerala had already worked out the logic behind calculus. Madhava of Sangamagrama calculated pi to eleven decimal places and showed that sine and cosine could be written as infinite series, the same idea the world later called the Taylor series. All of this happened on a palm leaf, in a village most people have never heard of. We are taught Newton and Leibniz invented calculus. He built infinite series for sine and cosine before Europe had the vocabulary to describe them. Temples were not just places of worship. In Gupta era India, they were economic institutions that employed sculptors, goldsmiths, weavers and farmers, connecting communities across hundreds of kilometres.
